(Not) Just Another Roster Shot - Standard Steel 6712
Author: refarkas

It was August 24, 1978 in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. Fellow railfan John Woodworth and I could see 6712 (Baldwin VO-660) working inside the plant, but even with a 200 mm zoom, she was too far away. We hoped and prayed Standard Steel would tell us where she might best be seen from outside the plant. In the office, the man we asked told us that it was only a few weeks prior that he had been told of how rare 6712 was. Instead of telling us where to see it from the outside, he took us into the plant, had the engine posed for a few minutes, and this is the result!

Very cool Bob.  That engine is now on the SMS in New Jersey but I'm not sure if it's in service or not.

Amazing paint job for a steel mill switcher, thanks for the look.

That is the look you get when you try to make a something "stylish" out of a boxy switcher.
Kinda funky radiator!

Love that VO grill. Even better it still exists!

Where is it now? Did the steel mill buy it new?

I vaguely recall being told she was a former Baldwin demo unit.  Was at the museum in Altoona for years before going to SMS in New Jersey.

Brilliant shot and a great story. Sometimes you meet an angel in the office, and things turn out like this. You can only ask.

Going back to the nineteenth century, Standard Steel was owned by Baldwin. Eventually it was owned by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, until the demise of that firm. The Burnham plant may well have been 6712's next stop after its barnstorming career.
