Nostalgia & History > Was Hoosac Tunnel still double track in 1953?Date: 02/11/26 17:31 Was Hoosac Tunnel still double track in 1953? Author: timz Think that date is right?
https://railphoto.historyit.com/items/view/digital-museum/210607 Track spacing looks less than 12 feet. Why is the hill above so bare? Date: 02/12/26 04:23 Re: Was Hoosac Tunnel still double track in 1953? Author: DavidP Not certain about the date, but the absence of catenary indicates it's after the B&M retired the electric locomotives that would pull steam-hauled trains through the tunnel. The snow on the ground suggests a winter shot, which accounts for the bare trees on the hillside.
Dave Date: 02/12/26 05:32 Re: Was Hoosac Tunnel still double track in 1953? Author: Jimbo The bare strip above the tunnel portal could be the right of way for the pole line, and probably previously the power line when the tunnel was electrified. This would be on the railroad tunnel property.
Jim Date: 02/12/26 05:41 Re: Was Hoosac Tunnel still double track in 1953? Author: train1275 I believe the tunnel was double track until 1957.
The electrics were gone sometime in 1946. |
