Sunday on Yellow Bank Curve.
Author: hank

A BNSF eastbound intermodal rounds Yellow Bank Curve in October 2001.  Location is MP 251.5 on the BNSF Marceline sub and a couple miles west of Argyle, Iowa.  The bridge you see spans the Des Moines river that forms the border between Missouri and Iowa.

Wondering?  Is that shot possible anymore or has it all grown up?  Might be in that area later this summer. How assessable is it? I always enjoy your videos from that area.

This particular shot is now impossible due to brush and trees.  Getting back to the bridge is doable but not easy and requires willingness to drive or walk the ROW access road (marked as no trespassing).  The road itself is passable by 2 wheel drive car if not too muddy and rutted.  I've had some harrowing trips getting back out of there (uphill, with one extremely steep, but short portion).  One time driving my '96 Olds Cutlass on wet, rutted and soft ground, we made it out but I still wonder how.  I wouldn't try it now.  One time my Buick Century bottomed out on the ballast and tore 10' of tailpipe and muffler from the catalytic converter on back, off the car.  Couldn't fit it "in" the car so pitched it to the side and finished the day with a very noisy ride.  One time with my S-10 pickup ran over a good sized tree branch buried in grass which broke the fuel line.  Made emergency repairs to get back to civilization and miraculously made it to Donnellson gas station with gas spraying out the fuel line where I put 17 gals. in a 14 gal. tank.  Last time we went down I had my '99 Blazer, made it down and back with no issues but got scared when we got down there and found 2 BNSF bridge inspectors on site.  They waved and said hi and didn't give us a second glance.  Always an adventure!
