.   .   .   in NOV '13, BNSF 8978 was climbing southbound on the normal northbound only main two a mile north of Palmer Lake, CO, on the joint UP BNSF Denver Pueblo Joint Line.

Excellent shot, JB!  Do you know why they were running wrong main?

Not really, just happened now and again. Often due to either a stalled or DOL train on main one or track work. Helpful to have operating ATCS back then. There is only one hand throw connection between the two mains, one mostly former Santa Fe and two mostly former DRGW, at Sedalia which was almost never used so pretty much all detours went the entire forty two miles. At the time, each main was signalled in only one direction. Coal trains took a little over two hours to get from Littleton to Palmer Lake but lighter trains only took about one hour so once the decision was made to do this, northbounds had quite a wait at Monument, Academy or Springs.

I love this scene from the eastern slope.  As soon as my eyes saw your shot, I thought 'eastern slope' what with the rolling hills, outcroppings of real mountain, and BNSF in the middle of it.  That's a beautiful area for train shots and you picked a winner of a spot.
