Nostalgia & History > Three WM near the endDate: 02/28/26 09:30 Three WM near the end Author: bobdavis My "collection" of Western Maryland Railway shots is microscopic. I wish I had spent more time along the WM but it was always a case of "there are a lot more trains over on the B&O". I did manage to get a couple of WM shots here and there before the railroad totally disappeared. #1 on June 1, 1974 is a westbound extra at North Branch, Md. with a single SD40 and 163 cars - 6 covered hoppers head out, 157 empty hoppers. I posted this one some years back. North Branch was a great place to watch trains back then, with the WM main line crossing over the B&O. #2 is the westbound Union Bridge local at Highfield, Md. on April 12, 1975 with 15 cement loads from Union Bridge. #3 on May 24, 1975 has westbound BT-1 at North Branch on the B&O with 59 cars. By this time most of the WM main west of Big Pool, Md. was out of service and WM trains including this one were using the connecting track at North Branch to get to and from the WM yards in Cumberland.

For someone who only shot a few roster shots before the sun went down, I thought "what a cool railroad." Sven Molson Date: 02/28/26 10:41 Re: Three WM near the end Author: refarkas The scene in photo three is classic WM.
Bob Date: 02/28/26 12:13 Re: Three WM near the end Author: ClubCar All three are nice photos of the Western Maryland which was a very classy railroad with well maintained equipment all the way to the end when, unfortunately, the Chessie Management slowly destroyed it.
