Tunnel Motor Tuesday, SSW . . .

.   .   .   in APR '87, the eastbound loaded oil cans were topping the grade at Vincent *changed, CA, (near Palmdale) on SP's Saugus line with eleven of thirteen units powering this train tunnel motors.

Weren’t the loaded cans something in the neighborhood of 13,000 tons? Awesome sight to see and hear!

Cool shots, suprirsed the head end had 7 units, usually it's 5X6, then when it got longer a few years later SP decided to go 4X5!

No. the train was a bit less than 10,000 tons.  Former oil can conductor here.  That power would handle the train up the Tehachapi grade about 13 MPH.

Thanks Brian, I may have been thinking of the coal train tonnage. There were several different ones over the years, but in the early 80’s there was one that was the heaviest train on the hill.
