Nostalgia & History > A Little SD, 8//74, Milwaukee, WI, & Northeast IL, 9//74Date: 03/04/26 04:21 A Little SD, 8//74, Milwaukee, WI, & Northeast IL, 9//74 Author: GPutz Near Custer, South Dakota, 8/21/74
1. An e/b BN train was led by SD9 #6199, built 9//57 as CB&Q #452, later BNSF #6199, renumbered #1713, renumbered #1553, + 3 units. We were on our way to Mount Rushmore when I spotted this train. There are no active tracks in this area southwest of Mount Rushmore now, just the Mickelson Trail, but the city of Custer has a BN caboose visible on Google Street View. Badlands National Park, South Dakota, 8/22/74 2. Sunset We camped here and were awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of a train. We heard it for a long time coming and going, blowing its horn for the rare grade crossing. Mitchell, South Dakota, 8/23/74 3. MILW SD10 #559, built 4//52 as SD7 #2200, later DM&E #559, INRD/DBGX #2001. I saw this unit in Rapid City 8/22/74, so it must have led the train in the night. 4. An e/b Milwaukee Road train was led by SD40-2 #139, built 7//72 as #3009, later MKIX #139, and TFM #1421, + GP40 #2031, built 1//67 as #158, later SOO #2031, rebuilt to KCS GP40-3 #4738, renumbered #2815, to PRLX #2815, BB #13. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 1974 5. "Port of Seattle" was on the rear of Amtrak 7, the w/b North Coast Hiawatha departing the station. Gerry Date: 03/04/26 04:24 Re: A Little SD, 8//74, Milwaukee, WI, & Northeast IL, 9//74 Author: GPutz Waukegan, Illinois, September 1974
6. EJ&E GP38-2 #701 was built 12//72, later to Birmingham Southern #701. 7. C&NW GP7 #1658, built 5//53, fitted for commuter service (note extra space on the long hood end for electrical equipment, exhaust stack for the steam generator on short hood and small fuel tank because of removed water tank), rebuilt and renumbered C&NW GP7R #4485 7/2/79, retired 1992, worked in the yard. Gerry Date: 03/04/26 04:26 Re: A Little SD, 8//74, Milwaukee, WI, & Northeast IL, 9//74 Author: GPutz Lake Bluff, Illinois, September 1974
8. An e/b C&NW train led by C-628s #6707, built 10//65 as N&W #1106, leased to C&NW 2/1/73, purchased 6/29/73, retired 10//90, + 1 more were on the connector from the “Shore Line” along Lake Michigan to "the New Line," built in 1905. I was strolling around my new neighborhood with my camera when I heard a familiar sound and this train showed up. I have ¼ Irish ancestry, and my luck doubled a few weeks later. Stay tuned. C&NW had, and UP has, two parallel main lines between Chicago and Milwaukee. The southern end of the Shore Line has commuter trains between Kenosha, WI, and Chicago, so freight trains working Racine and Kenosha, WI, and Waukegan, IL, on the Shore Line use this connecter to avoid most of them. In 2000 (26 years later) I participated in a business meeting at a conference center located on the other side of Green Bay Road from where I was standing when I took this picture. I walked over here during the lunch break, but my luck had run out. That venue has been replaced with two large homes, and UP has removed one of the tracks on the connecter. Rondout, Illinois, September 1974 9. Amtrak 8, the e/b North Coast Hiawatha, was led across the EJ&E by SDP40Fs #565 + 1 more. 10. An e/b MILW train was led by SD40-2s #138, built 7//72 as #3008, later TFM #1410, + #137, built 7//72 as #3007, later TFM #1411.
