Nostalgia & History > Thunder in the Mountains...Blue MtnsDate: 04/06/26 23:55 Thunder in the Mountains...Blue Mtns Author: funnelfan UP 2-8-8-0 #3803 leads train #257, the Kansas-Oregon Special with 57 cars and 2-8-8-0 #3608 pushing on the rear. They are making 15mph at this famous location between Hilgard and Motanic at the old Highway 30 bridge that is now in the shadow of I-84. Note the sand dust around the drivers. We've all photographed trains here over the years, but to have been there in the steam era like Richard Kindig was on December 25th, 1938 would be so fantastic. Best I can hope to do is to recreate this kind of scene when I receive my BLI model of a UP 2-8-8-0 later this year. Photo from the Preston George collection at the Oklahoma Historical Society.
