Not Where I Thought it Was
Author: funnelfan

Sumpter Valley Railway 2-6-6-2 #250 brings a train of lumber down along the Powder River on June 22nd, 1946. I used to think this scene was leaving the Boulder Gorge, but after a closer look I realize it was actually just around the corner from Mason, OR, where the Mason Dam now resides. The rocks on the hillside and the hills in the background definitely nail down the location. This well known photo by Henry Griffiths is part of the Preston George collection at the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Super scene! The narrow gauge 2-6-6-2 looks mighty impressive.

An excellent picture of what used to be.

Great photo of the Sumpter Valley so many decades ago. Amazing that a rail photographer would travel to such a remote area, although it's not that far from Baker CIty. But nonetheless, looks like dirt road access.
I did a bike tour through that region in '81 and remember the lake well. The other amazing feature was the mine tailings just upriver from this point.

The restored Sumpter Valley RR still runs through the dredge tailings. Here is another Henry Griffths photo of the #251 at the South Sumpter Wye starting the run up to Larch Summit. Aug 19th, 1946.

The super-elevation on those curves is impressive......
