A couple different train order signals
Author: gcm

Train order signals at stations and towers were usually semaphore or lit signals.
Here is a different type that I saw just a couple times.
Closeup shots are rough since I didn't get a chance to walk up to them.

The first one is on the Penn Central at Berea (Dec 1975).
Looking south on the Big Four Route with the Chicago line to the right of the tower.
This scene looks unchanged from the NYC days.
Just to the right of the old NYC signal to the left is a signal for train orders that I guess lit up (looks like it is lit) when there were orders.
Don't know if orders were attached on the post or the operator from the tower handed them up.
I saw the operator do just that from the middle connecting track.

The other one was at Wann Cabin in Wood River,Ill (Oct 1986)
The interlocking system was in the old yard office building after the tower had burned down in 1940.
From the northbound City of New Orleans on the ex-GM&O ex-Chicago & Alton.
To the left of the cabin on the ex-CCC&StL was what was described as an Adlake Train Order Signal (from RR Signal Pix.com).
I wonder if the one in Berea was also from Adlake.

If anyone knows more about these types of signals I would be curious to know.

Where are you finding the reference to the Adlake Train Order Signal on that site?  I found the documents on the No.1142 and 1184 signal lamps, which look like a match to the units in the photos, but nothing about the whole package as a TO signal.

This was an article on Wann Cabin.
It was mentioned about the foundation of the signal that was left and it was named but no history.

"2008, Standing on the CCC&StL line, the foundation is where the old Adlake Train Order Signal was located for the CCC&StL Railroad. This signal was taken down by UPRR in 2006 and resides in a private collection today."
