Nostalgia & History > That EMD SoundDate: 04/10/26 15:04 That EMD Sound Author: Fiftyfooter CRANK UP THE SOUND
NS 6069 leads a CP Rail and a former Southern Hi Hood unit upgrade. The train transitions, and then "Pours on the Coal"! The long Hood Forward EMD locomotives really sound incredible! Lots of nice boxcars too! Shot by Tom Luckey a TO Member! Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 04/11/26 12:30 by Fiftyfooter. You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! Sorry but, in my opinion the "beautiful EMD music" came from normally aspirated 567 and/0r 645 prime movers. That turbocharged crap, with exhaust silencers, just doesn't cut it,,,,,,,,,in my opinion. Well, if you want the REAL sound of turbocharged EMD prime movers, the absolute most spectacular "EMD Sound" was from the UP DDA40X units, which had two 16-645E3A turbocharged prime movers WITHOUT EXHAUST SILENCERS! Now THAT was loud. Date: 04/10/26 16:32 Re: That EMD Sound Author: Gordon1950 That sound more like a llittle wheel slip to me. Look closer and you see that the lead unit is a low hood.

Well yes but, long hood forward, standard N&W/NS practice. Date: 04/10/26 16:53 Re: That EMD Sound Author: x6924w Gordon1950 Wrote:

It's been so long since I heard a unit go through transition I can't remember how long it takes to load back up. Either way it sounds good to me. Date: 04/11/26 10:20 Re: That EMD Sound Author: CPR_4000 The silencers really killed the turbo sound. I remember chasing a pair of Soo SD60s on the D&H and being completely underwhemed. A pair of SD45's would have sounded MUCH better.

They're not transitioning out of dynamics. The leader catches a massive wheel slip from the frost on the railhead and takes a few seconds to recover. It's all uphill for westbounds there. This dude was 8nsand the whole time Date: 04/11/26 14:59 Re: That EMD Sound Author: perklocal Yeah Tom, I was trying to get you to chase this #555 north to Binghamton until it met it's counterpart #556 at Penobscot. One look at that lash up and we turned around and chased this multi-colored set of power back south to Allentown. Good Time for sure !
