Nostalgia & History > City of Kansas City reduxDate: 04/13/26 10:19 City of Kansas City redux Author: santafe199 Back on Saturday I posted a shot from the late Dick Humphreys. It was a copy slide of the City of Kansas City coming into Cheyenne from Denver. I had originally guessed it was the City of St Louis, not knowing the east end of its run had already been truncated at KC. TO member Ken Nagel (‘KenN’) reminded me that he had been on that same trip with Dick and the late Art Gibson. They were mainly chasing the 8444. But of course, everything else was fair game. I found a couple of images Art had taken of this COKC, making for a total of 5 sequential shots. Ken provided that actual date for this train. Using that to go back and add dates to all photography concerned I was able to find a working sequence for the five shots. Looking at the classic rising sun, shadow angle I do believe this is the first shot in the sequence…
1. UP 948 pointing train #9, the “City of Kansas City” coming into Cheyenne, WY on September 6, 1969. Copy slide by the late Dick Humphreys from the late James W. Watson collection. Thanks for looking back again! I see it as Lance described, Train 9 arriving Cheyenne from Denver, operating into the sun to reach the Cheyenne Station, where the 10-6 and Coaches for the west coast will be switched into the consist of the City of Los Angeles, etc. Hu Date: 04/13/26 13:19 Re: City of Kansas City redux Author: dan see the steam shop in background the train is heading away from? it is across from the depot. Here is video last week of the biz train retracing # 9 path into the depot area from the west , you can see the shop building on the left barely and the signal that on the right from the freight yard , with the double mast, you can see in Dick's pic the shadow from tower A , the signal bridge is now gone.

what's that signal at the right edge of the frame? That's not the shops in the distance? The C&S overpass is hidden? In the 6/69 timetable #9 was due into Cheyenne at 9:30 AM -- sun's too low for that. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/13/26 13:28 by timz. Date: 04/13/26 14:36 Re: City of Kansas City redux Author: santafe199 I was on the phone with Ken Nagel a while ago. He now has me convinced the image I posted today is actually the LAST in a sequence of 5 between Dick Humphreys and Art Gibson, both of whom have passed on. Tomorrow I'll be able to dig into the saga a little better, possibly with a couple more images. I just don't have the time tonight...
