Mishaps during the Amtrak Transcontinental Steam Excursion 1977
Author: PVSfan

My memory is a bit foggy on the details:  why did the train arrive in Houston with some kind of problem?

I rode the trip from Houston to San Antonio and recall that the 4449 was steamed up but an SP diesel supplied
the motive power for that segment.

On a different note,  I recall witnessing a car of inattentive railfans hitting a car in front of them and the trunk popped open!
It could have been serious.  Turned out it was just hilarious. No one hurt.

That happened on the New Orleans Worlds Fair train in 1984, westbound just west of Del Rio, TX.

We had a leaking/cracked boiler tube.
