1. Penn Central 4209 (ex-PRR E7A) and 4022 (ex-NYC E7A) with Trains 78 and 4, the combined Cincinnati Limited and Spirit of St. Louis, 20 min late (4:10 pm) in Indianapolis, IN (State Ave.) on March 25, 1971.

2. Penn Central Business Car 8 brings up the rear of the combined Cincinnati Limited and Spirit of St. Louis in Indianapolis, IN on March 25, 1971.

As the comments say, the trains were not combined until Columbus.

Thanks for sharing, but at Indianapolis, you cannot consider the trains combined, the way I see it. I think they were combined for Columbus and east.

Very nice! Rarely see pictures of the Spirit in Indianapolis. I believe the Cincinnati Limited joined/separated in Columbus, or perhaps Xeina.

That was one train that survived the May 1, 1971 cuts, and for a while was even improved under Amtrak.  However, PC's deteriorating track conditions and Conrail's rationalization plans made the schedule unviable by the late 1970s.

That route, if it had survived, could have been an important link in the Amtrak network.

Just like many other Routes in the Country. If they had survived,
would be an important and vital link to much of the country
