Warbonnet Wednesday: U30CG at Hutch

Rain or shine this was once an everyday scene in 1968. Fast-forward half a century and even a crummy weather shot becomes historic…

1. AT&SF 405 leads train #24 at Hutchinson, KS on September 16, 1968.
Copy slide originally from the late Tony Fey collection, photographer is unknown.

Thanks for looking back!

I love it when the exact day of a photo can be cited.

On this day travelers aboard this healthy consist were probably reading about Dallas QB Don Meredith who was the front page star on Sports Illustrated. Harper Valley PTA by Jeanie C. Riley was probably heard on the transistor radios which were on the coach seat window ledge for better AM reception. The lunch counter snack bar car in the middle of the train was probably busy with early morning breakfasts that cost about $1.35.

She was an all coach seat train of pass riders, economy minded souls and travelers who boarded at the small station stops the extra fare El Cap just whizzed by.  There were probably plenty of empty seats on this train.
