1. UP 951 leads Amtrak train #6 at Laramie, WY on August 15, 1978.

took the sfz a few times was always exciting with the E's on, UP cared and wanted the incentive  cash, you can see how long the train is, winter consists would not normally require help, but if there was snow or something 

I surprised they had no dome car. I thought the SFZ always had at least a superdome lounge car. Does anyone know what year they started Superliners on that train. I thought it was 83 but I could bewrong.

Ex SP domes ran till 74-76   once in a blue moon had low profile C&O domes, 4 on the roster west of Denver opertions.

East of denver on the SFZ/DZ  had a lot of domes but they would not go west

In 1978 SP said you could have domes  

Supeliners showed up with a trainset july 1980 with last steam set on the  SFZ 10/80

Dome went to the Coast Starlight in 1976

ex CO were only during 1974 when the SP domes were refurblished

Looks like UP 951 blew it's rear engine judging from all that fresh oil aft of the side door.

how does the oil get on the outside like that?

UP added (or removed them) at Denver, replacing Amtrak E-units out of Chicago or at Denver (for No. 6).. I used to photograph the 'changing of the guard' at Denver on an infrequent basis. The Es were not always placed on those two trains as I had shot them plenty of times with just a pair of SDP40Fs. E9As would either be added or removed at SLC.

So, yes, it was always a treat to see them on the SF Zephyr.

UP added power even after the  power ran thru , GP40x  were common  after the e's were scrapped in 1981 cept the 951.  withdrawn late 80

The e's never ran thru to slc always ogden on the sfz   as the SFZ never served SLC, ogden west over the lake

Rio grande continued to add as needed after the CZ began, and the SP would add units oak-sparks as needed

corrections always welcome

 

I believe UP 951 was the lead unit on the last COLA out of Los Angeler before AMTRAK took over.
