The End (pt 183): Local hack at Manhattan
Author: santafe199

Cutting my railfanning teeth in Manhattan, KS in the mid-1970s offered several interesting opportunities. Uncle Pete had 2 regular daily manifest trains each way, plus the usual grain extras. A regular local ran between Salina & Topeka 6 days a week. There was also a switch job assigned to Manhattan. It often had a GP30 for power along with a caboose which never had any slogans on the side. That said, the hack below has “SALINA LOCAL” lettered on the side giving us the story…

1. UP 25395 in Manhattan, KS on March 15, 1977. The eastbound Salina local on its way to Topeka.

Thanks for looking rearward!

Really nice one. I didn’t realize UP stenciled in like that—thought they just kept one assigned in a certain duty. Surprised it got past Junction City—must be going somewhere for upgrade/repair or re-assignment
Like the shot!
