Nostalgia & History > Few more DRGW along Arkansas RiverDate: 08/04/26 11:30 Few more DRGW along Arkansas River Author: bobdavis Attached are three more shots of the Rio Grande along the Arkansas River east of Salida, Colo. #1 and #2 show eastbound manifest 142-8 with 77 cars on June 28, 1982, first shot east of Texas Creek, second one west of Parkdale not far from the west end of the Royal Gorge. #3 on June 21, 1990 shows westbound PBOAT (Pine Bluff, Ark.-Oakland, Calif. trailers, formerly DRGW train 143) near Texas Creek. It is now well into the Southern Pacific era on the Grande and the power heading up the 58-car train is typical grimy SP except for the lead unit. At least you can read the number and hood lettering on that one.

My son and I just drove US 50 between Cañon City and Salida CO two weeks ago (actually we drove it twice but that’s a story for another day). I showed him your photos and he immediately knew where they were. It was bittersweet for me as the last time I was this way, we chased a train led by a brand new DRGW GP60.

JB Date: 08/05/26 20:01 Re: Few more DRGW along Arkansas River Author: eastlandt Thos GP-40's would rumble in those canyons and you could hear them from miles away. Really hate it is gone.
