A common sight in Cherryvale, KS right up to Amtrak’s day #1: May 1, 1971. Santa Fe’s passenger service down to Tulsa lasted right up the day before Amtrak took over most the national passenger system. Nowadays the old main line has been truncated and torn up north of Humboldt, KS.

I know F units were called "covered wagons" by fans & crews alike.  But this U30CG looks more like a covered wagon than any other locomotive I can think of.  It's a great looking photo no matter what.

Was the U30GC a good unit? 

As I remember my SFe days the 8000s were certainly no hogger favorites. But other than that 16- notch throttle they didn’t seem to generate any more complaints than other mid-late 60s GE power on the roster. The U30CG was the only Santa Fe road unit I never got an opportunity to ride during my 78-87 stint…

Nationally, Plains states like Kansas are thought of as boring and uninteresting. I appreciate your sharing this image an others that show these areas that proves that railroad photography in these areas can produce worthwhile results.
