Author: SPDRGWMILW The PLC in steam - now, I will admit that their Baldwins (diesels) were pretty cool, but steam is where it was at!! Here's PLC 35 sitting cold in the yard. I don't know if it ever ran again - this was summer of 1965.
Don Hall Yreka, CA Date: 02/10/04 12:18 Re: Pacific Lumber Co. Author: elmono Great shots!!!! I was a student at Humboldt State University in the late 60's and continued living in Arcata in the early 70's. Do you have any other shots of the NWP or PALCO at this time?
Date: 02/10/04 16:07 Re: Pacific Lumber Co. Author: SierraRail Here's another PALCO shot of Baldwin #105 with empties at Rohnerville, ready to depart for Yager Creek Camp above Carlotta in 1969. I too was a student at Humboldt State College 1968 to 1970. Got up at 5 a.m. and drove to Scotia to get these shots, as the PALCO left town at 6 a.m. Sharp! Those were the days! I sure remember some good times up there with the NWP, and their 200 car trains departing South Yard at Del Norte St. in Eureka. As Photobob said, it's all crap now!

Author: SPDRGWMILW I guess I need to at least throw in that I was at Humboldt from 68-74 (very slow learner). Somewhere, I've got a fair number of b&w shots around the bay. I'll see if I can track them down.

Got to watch the North Coast Railroad turn into the Northwestern Pacific and then die, watched the scrapping of the A&MR, etc. By the time I got there Scotia was the base of operations and Eureka was reduced to being the spot where the local out of Arcata and the local out of Scotia met to swap cars about 3 in the morning. Of course, the PALCO railroad was long gone by then, but those GE's were sitting in the Eureka yard waiting shipment to Dick Samuels.
On the plus side, my wife and I rode along with the Arcata local a couple times. Quite an experience heading out across the Arcata bottoms on uneven track at 10 mph in a GP7 at 11 PM. Those were the days... Got involved with the NCLIA group and worked quite a bit on the two Marshutz & Cantrell 0-4-0T's on the Fort Humboldt State Park grounds. Mostly fireman. Thanks for the pics. JDLX Elko, NV Date: 02/10/04 22:40 Re: Pacific Lumber Co. Author: elmono This is pretty strange......finding four Humboldt State Lumberjacks on trainorders. I went to school 65-70. Played basketball and did mime. Still do mime internationally. Still coach basketball in Santa Barbara. One of the first things I did in the fall of '65 as a freshman was walk with some of my friends on the rails all the way to Manila across the Bottoms. I had a prof. who lived on the Mad River not 15 feet from the tracks to Blue Lake and Korbel. I'd love to see more shots around the bay if anybody has them.
