ATSF matched set
Author: FT

Amoung a batch I recently received from my brother was this matched set
of 5900's. Too bad it was poor weather, I don't know how many times four
Kodachromes, all the same model, were the only power up the hill. Taken
2-15-86, by Ken Ardinger. It seems to me this was an arrainged set by a
fan in the right position in SF.

Nice! Good shot because of course you got a solid lash-up of Shouldn't Paint So Fast cowl units and because you also got a typical 80's intermodal train with lots of 45' trailers in tow! Been a while since I have seen a train of almost all 45' trailers...

The perfect picture would have been to catch a meet of SP and SF Kodachromes at the same spot...

Hmm.. I think I shot this same train just west of Summit too that day.

If you look closely, the second unit is an ex-Amtrak SDP-40F. There is extra room behind the radiator grilles for where the steam generator once was. Until I was shown this spotting feature, I could not tell an SDP-40F from an F-45 since they otherwise look identical.

2nd unit appears to be an FP-45. Note the door at the rear of the carbody. Compare the position of that door to the position of the side door of this SDP-40F: http://atsf.railfan.net/cowls/amt622a.jpg

The SDP-40F side door on the right-hand side is further forward than the right side door of an FP-45: http://members.aol.com/JFuhrtrain/FP45data.htm
