Nostalgia & History > Lil ChiefDate: 06/16/04 15:44 Lil Chief Author: photobob A rare image of the rarely mentioned "Lil Chief" that the SF ran in the off season. It was strictly coach with meal service provided by Harvey House box lunches. This scene was captured by Jack Whitmeyer at the San Bernardino depot in April 1949. As you can see it has front and rear markers plus ditch lights. A problem was that it had to run with a full crew which took up much of the space. The engineer, fireman, conductor and brakeman pretty much had the train to themselves.

Date: 06/16/04 16:46 Re: Lil Chief Author: SD9E If I'm not mistaken, that looks like a Budda car. I don't think many roads had the Budda cars, but I could be wrong. I know Union Pacific (OWR&N had a couple), and I think the MP.

Union Pacific (OWR&N) stationed a couple Budda cars out of La Grande for a number of years. Cars B-1 and B-3. The cars were originally delievered in a "Pullman" type green with "Overland Route Sheilds". By 1938, OWR&N repaited their cars into armor yellow, with simple "Union Pacific" (Railroad Roman) lettering. Here is a link to the Denver Public Library of a UP "B" car, as they were known by crews. http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?00019454 I'm trying to see if I can legally scan some images of UP Budda cars out of La Grande. I have several shots in a rather rare book titled "Rails and Derails" by Eldridge Huffman. The book has long been out of print (1947 by the East Oregonian Press), and I believe Mr. Huffman is no long alive. Some of his shots have ended up in the UPHS Streamliner publication, but none from this unique book.
