30-Years Ago, DRGW GP40-2's Built

Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad ordered thirteen GP40-2's, 3116-3128, from EMD in 1974. How time flies!

Ahhh, I remember 1974...but only barely. I was 13 years of age at the time!

Here's the Rio Grande 3124 when new, passing through Provo on an eastbound manifest. I was chasing trains on a Schwinn 3-speed "Racer" in those days. Note the GP9 at right returning to Provo from Geneva Works. I wonder what happened to that old Schwinn bike? Or the Rio Grande 3124 for that matter.

Geneva the final blow??
Author: tomstp

I guess Geneva steel closing was the final blow to D&RGW independence since they had already lost the steel mill in Pueblo. Any truth to that??
