Twenty plus years before there was a California State Railroad Museum, 4-8-8-2 SP4294 and 4-2-4T "C.P. Huntington" were on display on the lawn in front of the Sacramento depot. I took this shot in June 1960 while on a PCC-R&LHS fantrip. - Tony

Where was the lawn in relation to the depot? I don't recall any grass near the depot today other than that growing up through cracks in the asphalt.

What an impressive machine! Thankfully it was saved and its too bad that no other AC's were saved.

The lawn and much of the front of the depot area was removed when the state built the I-5 interchanges and connecting roads next to the depot and present day CSRM. - Tony

The CP Huntington was in a covered structure made of wood timbers (IIRC) and the 4294 sat there for several years. The cab was unlocked at some times and litle kids (yes I was a little kid once) were able to climb all over the engine, including along the little footrail along the cab sides. IIRC the unlocked cab annoyed my Dad because it meant easier access for pilferers who might take enough stuff to make it too expensive to restore the engine.
