Date: 01/30/05 17:13 GP9s Author: WichitaJct It was not unusual to see GP9s on main line trains--especially run-throughs. I have always assumed that the UP operating dept. wanted UP engines on the point because they would have standard UP equipment plus UP identifcation. GP9s were often called on for this duty. Here are UP 265/264/SLSF SD45 on a WB at Lawrence, Kansas, March '77.

Wow, this is the first time I have seen a photo with WP power east of Colorado. Thanks for posting Nathan Z. Date: 01/30/05 18:03 Re: Before There Was a Gazillion GE Wide Cabs..... Author: WichitaJct UP special, just east of Topeka, near "Calhoun's Bluffs", March '80. I believe that's the 928 on the point. Someone told me recently that the 928 sat somewhere near downtown Omaha for some time, became a home for some transients, and was eventually scrapped. What a waste of such a beautiful locomotive.

Cab signal (CCS) equipped units were required between North Platte and Gibbon, so most freights between North Platte and Kansas City had a UP pilot, even though foreign units could have led all the way between Gibbon and KC. Back in the late 70's, UP seemed to prefer low HP units as pilots east of North Platte to both Council Bluffs and Kansas City. Such units as GP9s, GP20's, GP30's, GP35's and even SDP35's were common in this service. |
