San Francisco scenes

I don't have a year this was taken, but it an amazing contrast to the neighorhood today. There was not a tourist or a tee-shirt shop in the area when this photo was shot near Fisherman's Wharf. In fact, the Wharf was likely used by working fishermen then! How times and scenes have changed.

Muni's F line ran on essentially the same streets as today's 30-Stockton trolley bus. I didn't know Original Joe's No. 2 was there in the old days. Car is headed inbound. BTW, OJ #2 went out of business after a long run at that corner.

A cream and green iron monster on the Muni's M line rolls on to Fremont Street from the Transbay Terminal for another trip to Broad & Plymouth in the Ocean View district. Chances are good a number of its passengers arrived The City on a Key System train.

PCC cars running on wooden streets and wood platforms for the passengers, too! BART construction was a huge project. The big hole in the ground also allowed space for Muni's new subway to replace those PCCs on the street. Alas, PCCs still run on Market, one of the most popular routes in The City.

Thanks Stash. More memories coming back. Roof rides on the Emporium, where my friends father worked. The lunch counter at the Woolworth's at Powell and Market, where I'd grab a burger and malt when my great aunt was showing me around SF as a kid in the 60's. Then off to hop on either a Powell and Hyde or Powell and Mason cable car for a run out to the wharf. Of course by the mid to late 60's, the wooden streets were mostly gone, as most of the Bart construction was moving along apace.

"Of course by the mid to late 60's, the wooden streets were mostly gone..."

Offhand, I'd say mid to late 60s is when they started the wooden streets.

"Alas?" Like it's not good PCCs still run on Market Street?

Speaking of Joe's, New Joe's was not far from the Powell & O'Farrel shot. But even they have closed down or moved to some as yetundisclosed location. At least they weren't where my automatic pilot took me to what I thought was the location a few months ago...

I had to work in SJ area for a few years and OJ's was my eatery down there. The rebuilt after a fire. OJ's feeds heavy...you don't eat there for a diet! I love the place. SJ's Joe's is in a much better neighborhood than the one in SF.

Thanks for posting the picture of Fillmore & Chestnut Street. When I was growing up my grandmother lived on Chestnut near Avilla (sp?). She talked about the streetcars, mainly how they shook the building where she lived. I think she was a trolley bus fan because of this. When I was young I always wished I could have seen the streetcars operate on Chestnut.
(Speaking of Joe’s “I still like Joes of Westlake” on John Daly Blvd. in Daly City.)

Stash,
I really enjoyed the San Francisco scenes. I remember Lefty's and Moar's Cafeteria a block or so away. - Tony J.
