Nostalgia & History > Empire State ExpressDate: 03/29/05 20:22 Empire State Express Author: cs16 While digging through some of my old papers, I came upon this unopened letter I picked up some years ago. The train's inaugural run did not occur this day.

Date: 03/30/05 01:35 Re: Empire State Express Author: moonliter So,when did the first run of the 'new' Empire State Express occur? Were the cancellation marks on the envelopes pre-stamped in order to have them ready for the inaugural trip?
The NYC issued a new system timetable on Dec 07,1941, were other changes postponed because of Pearl Harbor or just the launch of the 'new' Empire State Express? I also have a copy of your first day cover in my collection so I'm interested in any information you or any one else can offer. The event was supposed to produce big headlines for the Central, but as we all know, it was "overcome by events" of the same day.

Date: 12/08/13 09:46 Re: Empire State Express Author: TomPlatten I think most Americans still acknowledge that Pearl Harbor was a significant event in American History. Two factors have tended to dilute this however. One is the fact that it was 72 years ago and many many folks who lived through Pearl Harbor and the resulting war are gone. The other factor is the occurrence of the Twin Towers disaster which has become the modern day version of Pearl Harbor. Seventy years from now another generational change will occur and the Twin Towers will become a dim memory!
