Nostalgia & History > To the East Bay for traction actionDate: 03/29/05 20:48 To the East Bay for traction action Author: stash SOUTH BERKELEY was the SP station name for Alcatraz & Adeline in that Bay Area city. This Red Train appears to be headed for the Bay Bridge and San Francisco on what always was a busy line. A pair of streetcar tracks to the left of the train plus a pair of Key System tracks on the far side of the train made this a 6-track street. Note the human flagman and incinerator. Maybe that was to keep the flagman warm.
 Date: 03/29/05 20:51 Re: To the East Bay for traction action Author: stash Rockin' and rollin' along Louise Street just past the Key System yard and shops (beyond the overpass). Trackage here was rough, say the old timers. When the Key trains quit in 1958, a single track was built in the middle of the street for Oakland Terminal freight service. The OTR quit running along Louise and Poplar Sts., but rails remain imbedded in the pavement today.
 Date: 03/29/05 22:57 Re: To the East Bay for traction action Author: danf And for another "last time" - SP 5623 speeds down Louise St. on the way back to the flyover on 12/29/99 on her last run down Louise and Poplar Sts. The subject of this photo is obviously the converted wigwag signal (is it still there?), but you can see down Louise St. near where the last photo was taken. Glad you posted that photo as that's the first photo of a Key train on Loise St. that I've seen.
