Alcohaulic at Bayshore

Alcos contribution to SP's experiment of using drive shafts instead of traction motors. They certainly looked unique the nose was kind of like those U-50's. Thats a U-25 in the background.

Given the extremely short short hood, driving this beast must have been kinda 'sporty' in areas with lots of grade crossings.

So was there still a bathroom in that beast?

Actually, you sat up so high, and the locomotive was so massive (at least to us at the time), we never gave it much thought.

I've always found it odd that these and the K-M's were called hydraulics when in fact the transmission is primarily mechanical with gearboxes, cardan shafts, couplings, and, yes, hydraulic torque converters. I would call it a mechanical transmission or at least mek/hydro. I don't know if a real hydraulic transmission is feasible for a locomotive (engine turns pump, hydraulic motors turn wheels) but that's what comes to mind when someone says hydraulic.

British railways had hydraulic road locos I rode behined them on the run from London to Plymouth in the early 70's. I recall they where the smoothest starting trains I had ever experienced back then. I left the UK to come to the States in 73 so I do not know how long they where in use. I am sure one of our UK members can give us details.

Isn't a part (like a truck?) of one of the Alco hydro's in the CSRM collection at Sacramento? Or am I thinking of a KM?

You are correct, sir!

One truck and a Voith transmission from the 9801 was donated to CSRM before the three units were sold for scrap in 1973.
