Canadian Railroads > MLW MondayDate: 12/08/08 07:38 MLW Monday Author: M-420 A couple from BCR
#1. RS-18 #612 and C420 632 Sit in the morning Sun in the yard at Fort Saint John, BC in May of 1994. Time is getting short for green power on the railway and for the Alco era in general. The RS-18 has only a few months left before she will be sent to the shops for a rebuild into a Cat-powered CRS-20. The C420 will continue to be green however and will become the last green locomotive on the roster and along with sister C420 #631, will close out the Alco era on BCR. 632 can be found today on A&M, while the 612 has been retired by CNR. 2. M630 #710 rests between runs at the shops in Prince George on August 22, 1988. This set of power will be sent south on today's scheduled freight #36. The last two units (SD40-2 and M420B) will be set up as remotes for the consist. 710 was one of the final eight 6 axle locomotives in service on BCR. These 8 were held back a bit longer than the rest of the fleet follow delivery of the big GE cowls in mid 1990. Sadly, the respite didn't last long and the 710 and sisters were off the property by years end. She worked in Mexico for a few years before being retired and scrapped.
