MLW Monday More North of Superior
Author: kgmontreal

For last week's MLW Monday I showed a photo of CP's Heron Bay sub wayfreight eastbound around Echo Lake. For today's offering we return to the north shore of Lake Superior. This time we see the same train on a different day in 1978 and travelling in the opposite direction. It's westbound emerging from the Jackfish tunnel.

Question.  Last week your shot was an eastbound move.  How was the lake on the same (fireman's) side in both shots?

Thanks.

Last week's shot was eastbound around Echo Lake, not Lake Superior. Echo Lake is an inland lake to the north of Lake Superior. The track does not follow the shore of Superior at all times. This week's shot at Jackfish Bay does show Lake Superior. In the eastbound direction Lake Superior is on the engineer's side. Westbound it's on the fireman's side.

Yes. It's their mainline between Montreal/Toronto and Winnipeg.

Thanks for the explanation.

Too classic, even those lengths of rail in the foreground. The telegraph wires I understand, but what are those parallel white lines running top edge to right edge of the photo? They don't make sense as contrails in the sky; I feel dumb.

Just wonderful, love the array of telegraph lines in this photo. In a recent trip through the Fraser Canyon, there were still some towers along CP's route that have not yet roted into oblivion.

Those are the wires of a Hydro line. In fact, that power line was vital in getting us into that location. In the days before easily accessible aerial views and Google Earth we worked with topographic maps. When we wanted to walk into Jackfish tunnel the map showed that it would have been a very long walk from the old Jackfish townsite. But it showed that a power line crossed the Trans-Canada highway and Jackfish Bay close to the tunnel. So we parked the car on the highway and using the power line as a "handrail" walked down to the tracks on the east side of the bay. Then we had a relatively short walk around the bay to the tunnel.
