MLW Monday - CP and VIA Mix at Fredericton, NB
Author: feclark

The scene is early morning, June 9, 1982, before I had to meet up with my colleagues on a visit to the provincial geological survey in Fredericton, NB. The RDCs are VIA 6216 (furthest from the camera) and 6130, off the previous day's #615 (and darned if I can remember for sure if that was from Moncton or not; someone will know. I never did hang on to all my old timetables or Branchline issues to check into, and it's before the TSG existed, so I can't check back copies of that, either). From the presence of the step stool, it looks like it's primed to receive passengers for an outbound #616; the Budds may have been turned by RS-23 8024. CP's RS-18 8772 looks set to work some cars; later that day the pair of MLWs will make the daily turn, as #60, to Fredericton Junction. I never saw what happened during the day in my week-long stay. I was busy 0800-1630 every day.

That building with the tower is a classic . . . any idea what it was?

It is the former Hartt Boot & Shoe Factory, built in 1898-99. The company made shoes for the general public and boots for the military as well as the RCMP. The factory closed in 1999 and the building survives as an apartment complex.

Beautiful image Fred.

I did get to ride this short-lived VIA service two or three times but never got any good daylight shots of it. As you can see from the timetable that this was a daily Halifax-Moncton-Saint John-Fredericton service. With a departure time of 14:15 the step-box was most likely forgotten from the night before...remember this was in the days before eBay!

An excellent image recognizing the “everyday railroading industry” of the past.

Here's the google view today:

Restored CP York St Station (now an NB Liquor Store) and rotate the view around and the restored shoe factory is also still there. The closest track to Fredericton now is Fredericton Jct...20 miles away.

Thanks for the timetable; I shot #615's arrival several days, once delayed by a grade-crossing mishap. Maybe some day I'll dig them out.
