MLW Monday - Uphill Slowly

West of Montreal on CP's double track mainline the first obstacle to slow a freight trains's progress is St Lazare Hill, a grade from Dorion to St Lazare. Today the grade barely slows a pair of AC4400s but in first generation diesel days it dragged down westbound freights. Shown here is a mixed freight in the spring of 1974 behind an RS-18/RS-10 combo pullling hard as its smoke show illustrates.

What a fabulous shot; narrow stripes, tuscan and grey, smoke up the wazoo, cross bucks, and an EB that had the decency to get its van the heck out of the way on time! When everything comes together ...
