"on this day" dashing through the snow 12 images 4 video
Author: hoggerdoug

December 11, 2007, another snowy blowy day in the great white north. Getting ready to leave Prince George on a trip to our home terminal of Williams Lake on BC Rail.
images 01 to 03 On the lead waiting for MoW to dig out a frozen switch. The crews were busy with shovels, brooms, air compressor as well as a snow plow truck.

images 4, 5 & 6. My Conductor digging out "Miller" switch. Once he gets the switch lined, we will be on our way. The sign with "0" is the beginning of the "measured mile" to calibrate the odometer on the TIBs display as well as the odometer on the speedometer. Image 6, notice the smile on the Conductor, mission accomplished and back to the warm dry cab.

video 1 , near Strathnaver, mile 419
video 2,approaching north switch Colebank siding
video 3, Colebank, south switch.
Most switches have been equipped with electric heaters as well as the overhead street light. This was done after we went to two man crews and perhaps was a requirement when the caboose was eliminated.

One more video clip to post after these.

Last of this batch, video clip at Dunkley, mile 413.6 Prince George sub. We had no work there this trip and making track speed. Unfortunately the camera was at the wrong setting to complete the whistle sequence for the crossing. Not pointing any fingers, it was not me taking this video clip, I was busy doing other things. Camera was a Cannon, "PowerShot 85" and for an inexpensive point and shoot, I think it did quite well.
Thanks for looking. Doug

Winter must be one aspect of working on the BC Rail that you don't miss.

Winter on any railroad is a challenge, haven't decided whether I miss it or not. Sometimes the real challenge was just getting to work.

It's always sunny and 75 in the cab, Eh Doug? Winter railroading working the ground absolutely sucks, been doing it now for 18 canadian winters, and looking forward to being set up!

I served my time on the ground. Being in the cab has it's perks as well as negative aspects.
