CN Spadina Yd from CN Tower -- Dec 80
Author: gcm

(1) A few from CN Tower.
Looking at Google, the changes in these areas is quite incredible.

(2-3) The CN roundhouse was probably the largest I have ever seen.
That's a Ontario Northland F unit on the turntable.

(4) The Ontario Northland units have been placed next to a couple VIA F units and a CN Alco.

(5) The coach yard is mostly full with one of the VIA Turbo train sets to the right.

(6) Just above the coach yard was this large area of tracks with a tower (Cabin D?).

Wonderful shots. As a child I took my mother's Instamatic camera and wandered about the coach yards and that impressive engine servicing facility during a summer visit to Toronto. Amazing to think now, that such blatant trespassing was tolerated back in those days. I have a grainy print of an ON F unit I encountered that day. Perhaps it was that same unit you observed five months later. Thanks for sharing.

Great photos and they bring back memories. What a great time going to the office sign a release get a hard hat and roam the place.

Help a guy out totally unfamiliar with the area.

Looking at this in google aerial views today, it doesn't look the same, not even the location of the current roundhouse.

Has it really been changed that much?

You may be thinking of the Johns Street Roundhouse, which still exists in Toronto. The two terminals were almost back-to-back.

Yes, basically very little of this exists, with a sports stadium replacing the Spadina Roundhouse.

Great shots from the "Eagles Nest."

What might have been!

(from a CN ‘Keeping Track’ Employee’s Magazine around 1970)

The ‘Great Hall’ of Union Station would have been demolished (I circled the Royal York Hotel for orientation) and a new Boulevard constructed roughly where Bremner is today. The new Union Station would have been further south between the new Blvd and the Gardner Expressway. There’s a CN Tower in this proposal but certainly different than what was eventually constructed.
