Canadian Railroads > Reefer Container GenSetsDate: 03/18/18 19:45 Reefer Container GenSets Author: newtonville150 Frequently I see these gensets loaded on CN Intermodal trains. They seem to be standalone diesel generators housed in (I think) 48' intermodal containers and their purpose is to supply electrical power to temperature controlled (reefer) containers via cable. At night you can sometimes see lights on the sides of these containers. I'm told they can power up to 32 containers (googled CN CargoCool service.) Does anyone have any pictures of these things they can share here? Does CP have similar units (or BNSF, UP, CSX and NS for that matter)...I don't recall seeing any.

Saw them in Davis California westbound a few years ago. This was on a former Southern Pacific line. Seem to remember that one generator for five containers. These were Caterpillar gen sets from a east coast dealer in red containers they did have a color light display.

Edit: when the wires cross a coupling, here's a shot showing all the extra warning stickers that are placed around to prevent inadvertent de-couplings. Ray Edited 1 time(s).
