Just imagine how frigging late it would have been, if the engineers didn’t “make up time,” by opening the throttle when they could, scaring the dickens out of the passengers and putting everyone in danger at the same time. VIA should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to operate this once proud train, that is now a bad joke. 30 hours late. We should set up a pool for how soon 1 or 2 are 35 hours late—or am I too late with my suggestion, as that milestone has already been passed?

You do of course realize that there are speed limits that have to be followed? And of course blaming VIA for this is utter nonsense. Talk about horse flogging!!!!

Yes, just as there are speed limits on roads, there are speed limits on railroad tracks. And, just as many drivers of cars routinely drive faster than the posted speed limits, I truly believe that many engineers in general and VIA No. 1 & No. 2 engineers in particular, ROUTINELY operate their trains above the speed limits, ESPECIALLY when they are running many hours—if not DAYS—behind schedule. I realize that the main reason these trains are late, is due to waiting on sidings, as 150+ car freight trains take priority on the tracks that the freight companies own. That’s no excuse! VIA should discontinue operating these trains, until they can be operated in a manner reflecting the name “The Canadian.”

"Many engineers ROUTINELY operate.....above speed limits....ESPECIALLY when running late?"

"VIA should discontinue operating these trains?"

Do you realize what you are suggesting and the seriousness of such accusations? These are really broad comments! Even though there is some evidence of such in the PRR days when they operated the Broadway Limited, a speeding train under any circumstances in modern times has very harsh penalties associated with it.

If VIA discontinues the Canadian - it will never return. If safety violations ARE found out, that's another issue, but that's something that can be remedied. CN and VIA both need a day of reckoning to operate this iconic train.

I would also think that with many people bringing scanners and other railfan items aboard the Canadian, we'd hear more of this "speeding" that is going on.

VIA will look bad if they have a Major Wreck of train 1 or 2 for speed limited on the route. if the crew is speeding too much.

This statement shows a complete lack of knowledge of 21st century railroad operations. I don't work for VIA but have been a locomotive engineer for a Class I for decades. Regardless of what practices may have occurred "back in the day", today's operating environment is vastly different. I have personally been questioned by RR managers because an engineer I was piloting was 1 MPH over the authorized speed for a period of about thirty seconds on a downgrade. Managers don't have to spend time in the field with radar guns anymore, GPS and other technology does the monitoring and sends them an email. You should really do some research before posting such nonsense as this, which you have repeatedly done in recent times.

I spent decades operating locomotives in Canada.

My employer stressed that they did not want any excessive speed as it can damage both track and equipment.

All locomotives are equipped with event recorders that are routinely downloaded.

Also, most are equipped to apply the brakes on the train should the speedometer register over a certain speed.

Modern CTC (Centralized Traffic Control) includes event recorders both in the office and in the field.

I think it very unlikely that Via engineers routinely break the rules and operate at excessive speed.

Enough said.

The kind of nonsense posted by " Streamliner" is what gives railfans a bad name. In today's railroad world there is ZERO on purpose exceeding the speed limit EVER as it is an immediate cause to be terminated. As Chessie stated with the new cell technologies a trains speed is constantly broadcast in real time for one and all to see.

Streamliner please stop posting such nonsense.

Well, I'll take the word of you folks who are professionals in this field, as I am not. If you say that the No. 1 & No. 2 trains NEVER operate over the speed limits, fine. That said, then whatever the speed limits are, in many places between Vancouver and Winnipeg, the speed limits are WAY TOO HIGH! As outlined in detail in my thread: "Ride The Canadian? No thanks!" here on T.O., my wife and I recently rode No. 2. We were booked from Vancouver to Toronto, Prestige Class, but left the train in Winnipeg, as we were so concerned with the speeds the train was operating at, resulting at times, in a ride that can only be described as VIOLENT and for my wife as "terrifying." I won't repeat the whole mess here, but suffice to say that we have ridden many trains in the US and Europe. We have traveled well over 150mph on the TGV, with no worries. In addition, we have had our share of bumpy rides, that were not fun, but not horrible either. What we experienced on The Canadian, in our opinions, was just INSANE, extremely uncomfortable, unnerving and just plain scary. So, maybe the train wasn't "speeding" as such, but whatever it was doing--when it was actually moving--was, in many cases, just way too fast for the condition of the tracks.

And to prove that last point, you can see the current speed of all "Canadians" right here: https://asm.transitdocs.com/map

How often are you going to bring your trip up? It is getting tiring. Do you think that you have rehashed this often enough?

Amen again, what a ridiculous assertion from Streamliner.

If you don’t like my posts, don’t read them. You were not the one who blew almost $15 grand on a “first class” vacation, that was FUxED UP, thanks to VIA!

Please explain how any of this is VIA's fault. Then please go away and never tide the train again. Your loss. I have ridden the Canadian many times. And never felt in any danger due to excessive speed.
