Via 1 45 hours late
Author: Jimbo

Transitdocs.com shows Via 1 of the 19th is now over 45 hours late west of Edson, Alberta. It appears it left Toronto 22 hours late.

The eastbound Canadian is now being affected. It has left Vancouver late several times recently.

https://asm.transitdocs.com/map?train=8&day=23&rr=A

Number 1(19) is almost two days late. What action, if any, is Via going to take with timekeeping conditions as bad as they are?

Edit: The link isn't going directly to Via 1 but if you move up on the map you can find it.

CN is absolutely the worst North American railroad at this time. They will bring out a parade of excuses, but it is poor management.

No VIA passenger train should be late at all with a VERY slow schedule.

I am really sad that a well-managed railroad has sunk to these depths. The lateness of VIA trains is only a barometer of corporate health.

Is 45 the record? (Never arriving at all doesn't count)

Any particular reason or speculation of why the train is so late?? Poor dispatching, traffic congestion, mechanical issues, derailment or track work / maintenance ???? Just curious. Doug

But the food is good.

It wouldn't matter if the train never left the station.

Eventually VIA is going to have to bite the bullet and either turn some of the late trains around, or cancel trips to allow trainsets to reach the endpoints, be serviced and be in position to depart on time. With insufficient equipment to send out a train on-time when the other trainsets are still on the road, I don't see how else they can fix this other than a complete reset.

Probably a turn-back at Winnipeg from the west at some point.

That would be kinda like a negative late- almost like entering another dimension...  Cool!

(Like Groundhog Day, but with domes)

That could be a possibility since Vancouver-Jasper is apparently the biggest market. It would hurt the Prestige through passengers, however.

FORTY-FIVE HOURS LATE! Way to go Canada! VIA Rail Canada should immediately discontinue operating trains No. 1 & No. 2. If they can't run the trains in a reasonably professional manner, they have no business accepting reservations and taking folks money. I don't care whose fault it is. CNR, VIA, the Canadian government, the man in the moon! If the train can't be run properly, then it SHOULD NOT EXIST!

Damn Hunter Harrison!

The reports from various riders suggest that the relatively shorter passenger trains get stuck in the short sidings. And stay there.

Now that Harper has been chased out, isn't this something the Kid would want to address?

You gotta be joking!
The kid is only interested in Quebec and Ontario (ie: Corridor service from Toronto to Montreal).
Remember, his father screwed things up royally too!

Number 1 arrived in Vancouver this morning at 06:36 six minutes under 45 hours late. At least it didn't lose more time west of Jasper.

Does the onboard crew turn on tonight's number 2 of the 25th? Isn't the inbound 1 the consist for 2 tonight?

The delays are of interest to me as I'll be riding out of Vancouver next month.

Man, you ought to google “The Canadian Train” and see what is being said about the train and VIA. Not good! Is THIS anyway to run a railroad?
If you are thinking of booking the train, forget it. If you are already booked, cancel it. If enough people do so, maybe the idiots in charge will get the message. Where is the guy who always posts something about “not rewarding bad behavior?”

The "idiots in charge" work for CN. Not Via. Aren't you the same person who falasy  maintained the train was speeding and the ride rough? Thought so.

I kinda feel guilty that the VIA # 2 that I rode out of Vancouver on February 27 arrived in Toronto forty minutes early.

The idiots are in charge at VIA. Regardless of what company or entity is responsible for the causes of these horrendous delays, it is the idiots at VIA who continue to BILK passengers out of their hard earned money, promising a wonderful, magnificent trip, only to actually deliver a horrible, very disappointing trip, which in my opinion is also VERY DANGEROUS! There is "speeding" when actual speed limits are broken and I will acquiesce that such speeding may not occur. However, there is "speeding" when the actual speed the train is moving at is TOO FAST, based on the condition of the rolling stock and/or the condition of the tracks. The idiot VIA executives have put the order out, for the engineers to go as fast as the posted limits allow, to try and "make up time," which at times is WAY TOO FAST for the conditions, resulting in a VIOLENT and DANGEROUS ride for the paying passengers, not to mention the onboard crew. WAKE UP CANADA! "The Canadian" should be SCRAPPED!

So there is speeding when there may not be speeding, and us 35 million Canadians should rise up and demand the train be 'scrapped' (sorry, 'SCRAPPED'). Okay then.
