Train reported as being CP 142. Sounds like the line will reopen tonight.

Must have been very interesting derailment dynamics as the twitter link to the aerial view shows a long string of derailed covered hoppers parallel to a zig-zag string of intermodal well cars. Judging by how the Auto Max rack car (which sort of looks like where the consist separated) is bent like a horseshoe, I'm guessing the containers were ahead of the Auto Max cars and covered hoppers. It also sort of looks like there were cars still on the rails between the river bridge where the LPG tanks went off and where the well cars/covered hopper piled up so were there two derailments? How does that all happen? Was there a DPU pushing behind the derailed cars?

Not sure what happened, but I've never seen a DPU on 142.

Agree unusual situation. Curious if this is single or double track, could the covered hoppers have been sitting by themselves on the second track and knocked over as the derailed train passed?

The derailment occured on the Winchester Sub, which is double track.

Sure looks to me like two different sets of equipment were involved.

Noted also that the story states CP's main line links Halifax and Vancouver. CP hasn't had any lines in the Halifax area in many years, and never had a mainline presence there at all.

In the Global Report "Freight trains should slow down in built up areas and at level crossings"....

Just one train was involved. CP 142 (and counterpart CP 143) were once exclusively intermodal trains, but now both carry mixed freight as well.

Wrong. Evidently you’re not familiar with CP trains, which often combine both, as is the case here.

Could be - we'll have to wait for the Transport Canada report.
