However where back up moves were made, a "rat tail" was connected to the rear brake hose. The rat tail includes a small whistle and a brake valve. A rat tail was a metal pipe extension attached to the rear of the train, and hung from the end of a caboose or coach. CN also had portable back up lights in some locations.
The right side had a steam pressure guage and a large handle for "blowing down" steam from the steam pipe. Because the steam condensed into water once in the heating system, the pipe had to be vented frequently to avoid filling with water. Even with regular venting, in steam heat days, the rear cars of a passenger train could get cold. In very cold weather, CN would add a steam generator car to the rear of the "Super Continental" to avoid the rear cars freezing up. That said, I sort of prefer the previous scheme with more art deco lights and the pink accents instead of all black and white.
