CP's new 60 foot high cube Icebreaker Boxcars
Author: Marcus

CP has converted a number of its 60 foot high cube boxcars in the CP 220000 series to Icebreaker Boxcars.
Pictured is one in Kamloops.
They have also been seen in Calgary.

I'm confused on what they protect. CP has no dome cars, and Via runs on CN in tunnel country. Auto racks are enclosed and containers are not really harmed by a few icycles.
Unless this is pushed in front of  consist it won't protect cab windows ??????

They just use them to keep the icicles from growing too long over time.

It's kind of like cutting and trimming your lawn. The trick is not to let the icicles grow and turn into monstrous stalactites that can damage locomotives. If they keep running these cars more frequently it just keeps the ice cut back.

"Empty CG." Is that center of gravity? Can't remember seeing that data before.

That explains why they recently reitred a slew of 40' Icebreakers.

And yes CPR does own a dome car.  It is not out on the road as of yet but we are patiently waiting to see it!

Looks like CP went out of their way to promote their company image by leaving all that graffiti on the car.

Wonder if these cars are still used in revenue service.  They're not that old and I've heard there's actually a boxcar shortage.

And it won't be Joe Average who is riding in it.

Curious about the 40ft cars with icicle breakers. I've seen them in the past, how many and perhaps where were they assigned would be interesting info.

Interesting.  Here's  a photo of a 40' version in Calgary AB January 6, 2002.
