On This Day Fifty Years Ago (11/30/1968)
Author: refarkas

Part one is on yesterday's Nostalgia and History Forum.
John Woodworth, Mike Ondecker, and I had started out for Toledo, Ohio on November 29, 1968, had heard about rare locomotives in a scrapyard, and had driven to London, Ontario that night.
1.) The next morning November 30, 1968, we first went to the passenger station where we saw CN 6786 (MLW FPA-4) on the point of an eastbound train.
Then, having gotten directions to the CN reclamation yard, we found rare Canadian Locomotive Company locomotives in various degrees of being scrapped.
2.) Some were the CLC equivalent of FM C-Liners. Here is CN 9308 (CLC CFA-164).
3.) Others were the CLC equivalent to FM H16-44 locomotives. This is CN 2212 (CLC H16-44).

I was able to take only a few color slides. Here are two.
4.) Here is a color slide repeating CN 9308 (CLC CFA-164).
5.) CN 6801 is a CLC CPB-165.
Yes, the CLC units were all out-of-service hulks waiting to be scrapped, but to us they were slightly tarnished treasures.

The cold, snowy environment was so appropriate for a graveyard.  Looks like a flanger or caboose (van) behind one of the A units in the scrap yard.

It is interesting to see in photo 1 the 10-storey CN Tower under construction. Yes, London and Edmonton had a CN Tower several years before Toronto did. The London one was imploded in 2001. VIA has built a much nicer station.

I think I actually prefer the B&W photography in this case.

There were (still are) similar "CN Towers" (or should it be "cubes") in Moncton and Campbellton, NB too.
