Canadian Railroads > Ports of Vancouver vs Prince RupertDate: 12/29/18 17:37 Ports of Vancouver vs Prince Rupert Author: Northern How much of a difference is there between the ports of Vancouver vs Prince Rupert with respect to kinds of cargo handled? Are the same types of traffic handled at both ports such as grain, containers, potash, etc.? Which port originates and terminates more traffic for CN? Would the port of Prince Rupert be a stronger port if it was not captive to only CN? How much of the traffic from both ports ends up in the U.S.?

Lots of statistical info on cargo and volumes at these sites: https://www.portvancouver.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/2017-Stats-Overview-1.pdf http://files.rupertport.com.s3.amazonaws.com/pages/111/2017-annual-report-summary.pdf?Expires=1844695953&AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJT7NKA535OKDFPBQ&Signature=IKgf2ld7o80xLugGw4GHXq%2BPiJc%3D Date: 12/30/18 11:51 Re: Ports of Vancouver vs Prince Rupert Author: Lackawanna484 Three days closer to China than Los Angeles, and a day and a half faster than Vancouver.

Date: 12/31/18 10:32 Re: Ports of Vancouver vs Prince Rupert Author: rob_l Prince Rupert has no domestic market and so it has no supply of domestic containers. Thus for containerized imports it is only useful for imports proceeding intact in marine containers to inland distribution points. Consequently, it is disadvantageous for high-valued goods (because flexibility needs to be preserved to reroute those goods to where they will sell soonest once they arrive on the West Coast) and for goods that are re-sold once they arrive in North America.
If you could see the declared values of imports at Prince Rupert vs. Vancouver you would find that the average declared value at Vancouver is much higher than at Prince Rupert. Along the south bank of the Fraser River there are many large distribution facilities than trans-load the contents of marine containers into re-shipments in domestic containers. Over time, the percentage of containerized imports moving intact in marine containers has been declining relative to the percentage trans-loaded into domestic containers, and that trend will continue as we move further into the e-commerce age.
