CP Spiral Tunnel derailment
Author: Chessie

Word from multiple sources is that trains are moving/staging on the Laggan Sub. in preparation for reopening of the line later today.  Thursday's derailment, initially reported as 27 cars inside the tunnel was later revised down to 15 cars.  I would imagine there has been a lot of traffic via Coalhurst/Crowsnest/Fort Steele the past two days.

Good thing CP still has a viable alternate route and that it wasn't a casualty of EHH.

Local paper has an overview of the situation.  No haz-mat, several responders to the article taking swipes at each other...

Isn't the tunnel "slab track"? Maybe the track structure was tough enough to withstand major damage.

Me thinks that a couple of the responders are missing their tin-foil hats!

Slab track is used in the Mount Macdonald and Shaughnessy tunnels. The spirals and the original Connaught tunnel have traditional ballasted track.

I thought the lower spiral had been rebuilt 15-20years ago?
