Canadian Railroads > CN and CP RDCsDate: 02/03/19 16:50 CN and CP RDCs Author: Ray_Murphy In the summer of 1976 (the last season of CN passenger operations pre-VIA), CN ran an afternoon westbound Montreal-Toronto train #55 using RDC equipment. It passed through suburban Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue at the same time I would be waiting at the CP station for the inbound commuter train #232, also equipped with RDCs a lot of the time.
These two pictiures were taken just a few minutes apart on August 5th, 1976. The (trailing) CN RDC on #55 seems to be #6106. The leading CP RDC on my train is #9055. Ray Edited 1 time(s). My recollection is that the RDC's went to Brockville and met an Ottawa to Toronto train. Any passengers destined for beyond Brockville then transferred to the train that originated in Ottawa. (Which was a conventional consist)
I took this train and remember the RDC's being kept in the pocket track at Brockville and reversed the procedure back to Montreal. Of course I could be totally incorrect in this. Date: 02/03/19 18:35 Re: CN and CP RDCs Author: Ray_Murphy You're probably right. I just know they were outbound in the Toronto (not Ottawa) direction, and just lasted a few months.
Ray Date: 02/03/19 18:49 Re: CN and CP RDCs Author: Mberry Very nice shots.
Michael Date: 02/04/19 21:35 Re: CN and CP RDCs Author: feclark Ray,
This is a great post, not just because these are both terrific B&W shots, but also because it explains something I shot in my early days and never knew what it was. I'll have to rummage around and dig it up, but in 1976, probably, I was riding the Toronto to Ottawa train and when we pulled in to Brockville, there was a pair of RDCs in that pocket track behind the station. Now I know what it was (and 4489 is correct)! I'll try to scan and post it some time; not a great shot, being through the less than pristine coach window. Fred Edited 1 time(s). IIRC....I rode a CP commuter train out to Pointe-Claire once consisting of 11 units!
Here’s the timetable effective on April 25, 1976 showing the Montreal-Brockville trains connecting with the Ottawa-Toronto trains. This was also the first “VIA CN” timetable. Date: 02/12/19 03:05 Re: CN and CP RDCs Author: ghCBNS In the timetable just before that: October 1975....the Bonaventure and Lakeshore did run through between Montreal and Toronto.
