Saskatchewan Sign Mystery
Author: CNStratford

With regard to my Saskatchewan Mysteries, Hoggerdoug asked for a better picture of the sign,
It looks like Watino, but Google Maps knows of no such place?  Any ideas?

Yes, located on the McLennan to Grande Prairie line (Smoky Sub).

Track is no more as the old mainline is severed, not quite sure where it ends coming from the west, but it ends at Falher in the east.

Watino is on the west bank of the Smoky River where Hwy 49 crosses. Just downstream (north) is/was the NAR crossing. In spring 1982 the Smoky River was in flood stage and severely damaged the 2 eastern most piers. In the winter of 1982-83 we contracted with CN to do the repairs - completely rebuild 1 pier and sheet pile and grout the base of the other.

We actually have one picture hanging on the wall of our office. A decade or so later and the line is cut between Falher on the east and Eaglesham on the west. The town on the west side would now be served by the ARR line now owned by CN that comes north from the main at Swan Landing (near Hinton) and connected with the ex-NAR in Grande Prairie.
