Canadian Railroads > Actual text of Hand Brake Order and table of brakes to setDate: 03/14/19 22:26 Actual text of Hand Brake Order and table of brakes to set Author: Marcus The actual text of the Ministerial Order of February 8, 2019 -
"When a train is stopped by an emergency brake application on a grade of 1.8% or greater (i.e. mountain grade), immediately apply a sufficient number of handbrakes, in accordance with the attached Appendix A, before recharging the air brake system to prevent involuntary movement of the equipment." Full letter - http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/railsafety/ministerial-order-19-03.html Image of Appendix A Date: 03/15/19 09:25 Re: Actual text of Hand Brake Order and table of brakes to set Author: mp35mountain So if I understand this correctly, a westbound 10,000 ton grain that goes into emergency on a downhill 2.2% grade has to manually set handbrakes on 72 cars? That would take what 4-5 hours to do? Then they would have to take another 4-5 hours to release the handbrakes. No wonder CP wants to come up with a different way.

Hopefully, this will make this case more accesible to those concerned, and it will not take place behind closed doors in some corporate boardroom. In previous Government Investigations regarding runaways and so forth, there was the opportunity for employee input. |
