Switcher Saturday - Canadian's Power Change at Calgary, MLW Too
Author: feclark

About a month ago, Charls posted up the orphan nose of CP RS-10 8560, at https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?15,4729869. He was looking for photos of that unit, to print next to the restoration he plans. I thought I had the beast, but it was 8580, roster-shot, and then in "action". It's July 9, 1980, at Calgary's downtown station, and VIA #2 is in, getting some of the power changed off. Its arrival was in the vicinity of noon, so I'd often wander over on my lunch hour to see what I would see. This day, RS-10 8580 and sister 8576 (still in script paint) were waiting. When #2 arrived 1245, behind 1407, 8515 and 8520, the games began. Essentially, the lead F was retained, and the two road switchers got changed out, with the non-d/b MLWs to run east of Calgary. Doing the honours is SW900 6713, one of the fleet of about 10 of these that drew assignments in Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat, for example. I'm tempted to frame this with the question, "How many employees does it take to change a consist?" At least it's an RS-10 nose, if not 8560.

4489, I believe you are thinking of 8558, not 8580.

I believe that you are correct.  My error.  I will remove the post.

8580 was used in the Montreal Commuter pool.

Thanks.
