Miserable Alberta Monday's-Where's Budd?
Author: arwye

Normally CPR's Calgary to Edmonton run was handled with a small fleet of RDC's, except for long weekends and extended holiday periods, such as Christmas and Easter. Well, its March 16, 1974, and Christmas is long gone with Easter still a month away. So it appears bad weather has seen the return of a conventional passenger train for #302's assignment. While the ground around the Balzac Seed Cleaning plant looks barely covered snow wise, GP9-8522 has obviously been bucking some drifts since leaving the frozen tundra of Edmonton. Richard Yaremko

Fantastic !  Great to see a passenger Geep in the old scheme with this equipment in 1974. Love the seed cleaning plant as well.

About the only difference between Edmonton and Siberia is the language spoken.
And that's a maybe...

Looks to me like it might be the steam generator car

Did CP have Steam Generator cars? Don't recall ever seeing a photo before. I know CN had many.

I seem to recall reading in a book that CP had a rule that revenue passenger equipment (ie a coach) had to be seperated from a locomotive by a piece of non revenue equipment such as an express boxcar or baggage car. I believe 8522 has a steam generator in the nose, so the express boxcar would have steamlines for the coach.

Could that have been true for the Rigaud (now Vandreuil) commuter trains ?

This ought to be in a book! It has too many classic elements, down to the big boat of a car in the foreground, and the truck grille poking out of the elevator. When I finally got around to shooting this in the late 90s, I guess it was, there was this honking great telecom tower and it ruined the shot. Well done!

The GP9 is s/g equipped. The box is a probably one of the high speed cars CP used for express service and was equipped with steam lines, air and signal lines.  Probably surplus by this date.
