TH&B Tuesday

It's a cold wet day here, nothing better to do than post some images.
All images taken October 1978 at the TH&B Rly, Chatham Street roundhouse in Hamilton Ontario.
53 & 71 as well as some CP units. The CPunits were for the Goderich Switcher.
71 looking a little worn and grungy. 71 was the first GP7 built in Canada at the GMDL plant in London, ON. We ran them short hood forward.
54 taking some time out at the shop. They sure were a great unit for switching and good on transfer drags.

Does the TH&B as a company still exist on paper, or is it totally dissolved into CP ?

Those CP SW1200rs's in the first image.  The Grand River Railway/Lake Erie and Northern, a pair of CP interurban lines were dieselised with SW1200rs's. They had a unique feature, a plate across the front and rear handrails (like some GO Transit units). Those two appear to have the handrail covers.

CPR and NYC had vested interests in the TH&BB until 1977 when CP Rail took full ownership and the TH&B was officially gone in 1987. The city of Hamilton had some financial interests as well in underwriting "bonds" etc to finance the TH&B in the early years. I worked for the TH&B briefly, 1972-197. A visit to the area last year and some of the roadway underpasses still had the TH&B Rly logo on them. One was at the overpass on Aberdeen Ave painted on the steel structure and the overpass on Hwy 2. If I recall the concrete overpass on James Street in Hamilton still had the TH&B logo embedded in the concrete. Also the Hunter Street Station has been renovated and is now a GO train / bus terminal and there is a TH&B museum on the second floor of the building.
Couple of good books about the railway "In the Shadow of Giants" written by Norman Helm. Also a recent pictorial book "Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo" by Stephen Timko.

I believe the NYC-CPR interest had multiple names/subdivisions.... CASO (Canadian Southern), Michigan Central... Correct??

Good eye Phil !! perhaps at the time I did not notice that. I Googled 8164 and did find an image of 8164 with the plate across the front. I did not find an image of 8144 so do not know if it was the same,
I wonder what the purpose of the plate was for, safety or wind deflection ??

I believe the NYC-CPR interest had multiple names/subdivisions.... CASO (Canadian Southern), Michigan Central... Correct??  
CASO was totally separate operatoin by NYC / PC and then it fell apart during the Conrail era. Most of that track is gone although CP retained a section from Welland to E&O to get onto the former TH&B Dunnville sub to Port Maitland. I never did quite figure out the trackage on the CASO after all the changes. It's all crap now.

Hopefully TH&B Tuesday will e a common sight.  I have a model of #55.  I took the TH&B RDC out of Buffalo Central Terminal in 1979 with a few college buddies for a trip to Toronto.  Great ride!

The plate had black and yellow stripes in the old paint scheme, and red and white stripes in the CP scheme.

I'm going to have to dig into the slide file, but there were several 8100s with these plates, which I was told from some sourece were painted wood, not sheet metal. Phil is correct (different reply/post) that these wore different stripes, appropriate to the paint scheme, and I think in some cases ended up mismatched i.e. 5" and 8" CP Rail. Once I've looked them up (won't be tonight; out to "the theatre"), I'll put up some numbers, and I think I have an action shot as well.
